"In a pandemic, everything from syringes to hospital beds, respirators, masks and protective equipment would be in short supply"
Swine Influenza or H1N1 Swine Flu receives its name from the host it is most likely to inhabit. This particular strain of influenza virus typically affects swine (pigs) and has been known to cross infect humans who work closely with both swine and poultry – especially those who have concentrated exposure. From there, however, this type of influenza can mutate into a flu strain that is possible to pass from one person to another. This is the health crisis that we are currently facing.
What is the Swine Influenza?
Swine influenza, H1N1 Virus or "swine flu", is a highly contagious severe respiratory disease of pigs, caused by one of several swine influenza A viruses. The virus is spread among pigs by direct and indirect contact, and asymptomatic carrier pigs. These outbreaks in pigs can occur year round, with an increased incidence in the autumn and winter in milder temperature zones. Many countries routinely vaccinate the swine populations against H1N1 swine influenza.
Influenza pandemics have occurred three times in the past century. In 1918-1919, the worst of these pandemics infected about one third of the world's population and killed approximately 50 million people (Source: World Health Organization). As of june 10th 2009, The WHO (World Health Organization) has declared a pandemic level 6, the highest level, meaning that this virus outbreak has spread globally and cannot be contained. This current H1N1 outbreak should remind us of the need to remain diligent in practices to help the prevent the further spread of communicable diseases.
Pandemic influenza is virulent human flu that causes a global outbreak, or pandemic, of serious illness. Because there is little natural immunity, the disease can spread easily from person to person. According to the CDC, there currently is no pandemic flu.
H1N1 virus (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs. People do not normally get H1N1, but the CDC has determined that the H1N1 virus is contagious and is spreading via human-to-human transmission.
Avian influenza (bird flu) is caused by a virus that infects poultry and is spread by migratory birds. The H5N1 strain of the virus has begun to infect humans, but has not yet evolved into a form that allows it to spread easily among humans. The main cause of human infection is close contact with dead or sick birds, according to the WHO.
If the virus evolves into a form that is easily transmissible between humans, a pandemic may result. In a pandemic, it is likely that a large percentage of the world’s population will need some degree of medical care, which has the potential to strain health care services. Pandemic influenza may cause a reduction in vital public services such as health care, law enforcement, transportation, utilities, and telecommunications. It could also lead to a significant increase in employee absenteeism and an economic slowdown.
What are the implications for humans?
Outbreaks and human infection with H1N1 swine influenza have been reported. Often the symptoms are similar to seasonal flu, but reported cases range from mild, asymptomatic infection to severe pneumonia, resulting in death.
